Camp Cadet - This is a program sponsored by the State College police for area youths, age 8-14. This is a two-week camp, one week for boys/one for girls. The police volunteers provide guidance and support to the youths to improve their self-image and respect for social rules of order. The Jaycees go to the camp each Friday night and cook "mountain pies" to show our support for the program. In the past we have also made a monetary donation.
Big Brother/Big Sister - The Jaycees sponsor programs for the big and little sisters and brothers such as snow tubing and Easter craft and egg coloring. The Jaycees participate in their Bowl-a-Thon by sponsoring a Jaycees team for three games of bowling. The members raise money for the program. Requires 4 members.
Brookline Village Nursing Home - The Jaycees visit Brookline Village residents to assist with craft projects, Christmas Carol and play Bingo.
Food Drive - The purpose of this project is to collect food at area supermarkets to stock the State College Area food bank. This usually occurs between the winter holidays.
Football Skills - This event was once known as "Punt, Pass and Kick". The PA Jaycees support this program statewide. Our chapter has been host for the local, regional and state competition since 1990; plans are to continue this level of activity. The PSU football team has been very supportive of this event. The competitions occur on a Sunday in September and October with the state competition on a Saturday in November. A guide for running your own football skills competition is located here (Football Skills Guide)
Outstanding Community Service Awards (OCS) - The Jaycees solicit nominees from area businesses and service areas (police, fire etc) who have shown significant success in their areas demonstrate active community service. The Jaycees host an award presentation night, where plaques are given to the recipients and individuals for organizations who have supported the Jaycees. Requires 10-15 members for 3 hours in April. Members are also encouraged to attend as this provides an opportunity to meet area business people plus local and state government officials.
Outstanding Young Woman - This program is a competition among local Sr. High girls. Competition areas include: academic, community involvement and talent with a scholarship awarded to the winner. The girl chosen for Centre County competes at the State level. Jaycees involvement includes: 1) a monetary contribution; 2) manpower for the night of the local competition in the fall and 3) two members sit on the OYW Board.
